About the Program

The Colts in Training Program was established seven years ago as a two term class here at Oregon State. It gives students the opportunity to gain hands on experience and learn new techniques of training horses. Most of the students are juniors or seniors.

At the beginning of winter term in January each student is assigned an unbroke colt or filly. During the course of the program the student will go through the steps of training the horse including ground work, sacking out, and starting the horse under saddle. The goal for these colts is to leave the program with a solid foundation of basic training and be able to be finished in any discipline. They are started in the fundamentals of reining and many would do well in ranch-type work.

In June, when the program is complete, the colts are sold through the auction at the annual OSU Colts in Training Sale. The revenues generated from the sale go toward supporting the program and caring for the colts used the following year.

This year the sale will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2009. We are holding an Open Cattle Competition as an additional fundraiser in conjuction with this year's sale. See 2009 Open Cattle Competition for more information.
